Picking blueberries - a heavenly pleasure
July 18th, 2020 | main dishes
Blueberries, bilberries – two names for a wonderful fruit. And now it’s season! Anyone who has ever eaten a blueberry pancake with real forest blueberries knows that the effort of picking is worth it. So, let’s go out into the forest…
They are tiny, they are blue, and they give a lasting color. The hands are blue-violet (but do not worry, this is lost after washing your hands once or twice, though light clothing should be avoided when picking…) and it takes a while until the basket is filled to a certain extent. But the taste is unique – and not to be compared with the cultivated blueberries from the weekly market.
Blueberries are an absolute childhood memory for me. We regularly spent our summer holidays with our grandparents in the Odenwald. It was exciting there, there were quinces that we didn’t even know at home, a large vegetable garden, unknown herbs, a completely different kitchen than at home, different bread, spaetzle with cherries and bread crumbs. So many delicious things. And then the blueberries…
At the end of every summer vacation, it was a tradition that the whole family “went into the blueberries”. Everyone headed towards the woods with milk kettles and other containers to collect these small, delicious blue berries. It was fun and I will always remember it.
Yesterday I collected blueberries again after years. Yes, it is tedious, but it is also meditative and calming. And when I baked blueberry pancakes on a grill plate with my daughter in the evening around the campfire, it was simply delicious and a very special meal. It’s just a shame that it wasn’t a Captain’s Dinner because our captain currently is on board…
Of course, you can also fry the pancakes in a pan and topped with apples, bananas or bacon instead of blueberries. There are no limits to your imagination. And here is the recipe for this sweet, heavenly blueberry temptation:

Ceviche at Cantina Popular
“Oh my god”, the captain said during the last shore leave in Hamburg, honoring the first bite of the Ceviche de Lubina… The CANTINA POPULAR is loud at first glance, it’s tight, it’s busy, lively and colourful. The waiters in all that hustle and bustle are cheerful and attentive. One has arrived – in the middle of South America. And Chef de cuisine Cristián Orellanus says “Bienvenidos”!
